Ghosts at Sätra Brunn

See and hear Tord Berglind tell the story about our ghosts (Swedish only) (from vlt.se)

Sätra Brunn has been around for over 300 years. It would be strange if there were no ghosts at all, wouldn't it? In any case, our ghosts are very peaceful and all they do is make some noise and disturb things a bit.

In the Linen storage in the kitchen and in the staircase to the second floor of the kitchen there is a presence, many percieve it as an older woman with a headcloth. Most likely its one of Bath Master Bohlin's daughters, Emma or Maria who worked as cleaning ladies at Sätra Brunn for all their lives. The ghost makes itself known late in the evenings by slamming doors or opening closed doors, drafts through the kitchen, lamps that are turned on or off, locks that cant be opened or locked and sometimes you see a flicker of cloth in the corner of your eye. The ghost or presence is not mean but wants to be left alone. Possibly the sisters worked on times when the kitchen staff were not there, to clean and wash sheets, cloths, towels and aprons.

In the same Linen storage is a mirror that tradition says can never be taken down. Doing that would mean problems for those who are in the house. Now the old Linen storage room has been converted into a lunch room for the staff - so we'll se how the ghost will deal with that. The mirror is still there though!

In Henschens Bath House you will find the ghost of Bath Assistant August Andersson. He was a powerful man who did carpentery for Sätra Brunn in the winters and he shot many moose in his life. With his gruff and blunt ways he kept the guests in line and he is still hanging around to watch over his guests and bath tubs and run off anyone who should not be there.

In Riksrådet the ghost is the Red Lady. It is said that she was a guest in the 19:th century that was strangled by an unknown perpetrator. The remains of her and another person are in the foundations of the house. It was thought that the haunting should stop when the house burnt to the ground in 1945. It didn't and she is still looking around to find the person who killed her.

In Bergabo is the only really unpleasant presence at Sätra Brunn. It is percieved mostly as a strong sense of discomfort and you may feel very anxious or have difficulty breathing when you are in the house. The cleaners do not really like working in the house, but many guests stay there without noticing anything. It seems people have different levels of sensitivity.  As a balance to this there is supposed to be a white witch in "Fristaden" maybe it is Stina Gunnarsson who was responsible for the Ice-cellar and food stores at Sätra Brunn for many years.

About Fristaden it is said that it should never be demolished, because then the balance between good and evil will be disturbed.

The Bishops Kalsenius wife wa a powerful, rather mean and controlling woman. She and her husband who owned Sätra Brunn from 1744-1747 donated their property to Uppsala University in 174. She wrote in the letter of donation that she would be entitled to return during the rest of her life. She did, and she still keeps coming back. She lived in "Biskopsgården" in the summers until her death in 1773 when she died in that house.

The confectioner Ofvandal lived until he was 102 years old and he ran his business in Sätra Brunn in the 19:th century. He still has not left the house. On the second floor of the house with his name is an unpleasant presence that makes many people unwilling to be there. Now his parlour is restored and used again and it seems the temper on the second floor is somewhat better. It may also be the ghost of a coachman who is said to have hung himself on that same second floor in the 18:th century.....
